how to clean ugg boots1 300x284 Cleaning Ugg Boots

So you’ve just bought yourself a pair and want to know how to clean ugg boots. You can be confident that you have purchased a high quality product that will last you a long time. However, like any premium product, if it is to withstand the test of time, it requires the proper tender love and care. Your ugg boots are no different. Even though our natural sheepskin is hard wearing, it can be susceptible to staining and will need to be cleaned from time to time. So, to make sure that your boots always look as they did on the day you bought them, simply follow the instructions below.

Cleaning Instructions:

If you notice a stain on your boots, first determine the type of stain.

  • Apply water to the stain and if it lightens, it is a water-based stain. Simply continue rubbing the stain with a damp cotton cloth to remove it. If it is a particularly stubborn stain, apply some dishwashing liquid to the stain and rub until it disappears
  • If it is an oil-based stain, the stain will remain dark when water is applied to it. In this case, you will need to use a spirit or petroleum based cleaner (not metholated spirits). These cleaners are commonly found in supermarkets. Simply apply the cleaning fluid to a cotton cloth and wipe the stained area.

Washing Instructions:

It is recommended that you wash your ugg boots at least once a year.

  • Prepare a mixture of wool wash detergent and luke-warm water.
  • Dampen the inside and outside of your ugg boots.
  • With a sponge, gently scrub the inside and outside surfaces of each boot until it foams.
  • Rinse in cold water.
  • Stuff each boot with paper towelling, as this will ensure that your boots maintain their shape.
  • To dry, either hang them on the clothesline or put them in a cool, dry place. You can expect drying your ugg boots to take twenty-four hours.

The sheepskin used to make your ugg boots has been sanded to produce a smooth suede surface, before going through a chrome or cadmium tanning process. This treatment makes the boots easier to maintain as the sheepskin can withstand the use of water, mild detergents and spirit based products. Nonetheless, it is essential to follow our instructions on how to clean ugg boots, to guarantee the life of your boots.

  • Tonimac:

I followed the above instructions and unfortunately I ended up with a significant brown “tide mark” across the front of both boots. In addition, some of the very small, hardly noticeable spots on the boots are now large, dark and very obvious. In fact, my beloved Ugg boots appear to be ruined. Any suggestions as to how I can recover them?

    • Try rubbing the Ugg Boots with pure dishwashing detergent, then wiping it over with a wet cloth, gradually bringing it to a foam then wiping with damp cold water. This usually takes away water marks.

Do you remember how the marks got on to the Ugg boot? Some stains are almost impossible to remove but if you remember what got on to them, let me know and I will try to give you another suggestion. Eucalyptus oil often takes out stubborn stains but try it first on an area not so obvious if you can. Peter
